Somehow 3 weeks has passed since I returned from Seattle and teaching at the Chic Retreat put on by Chic Critique Forum! I still feel like I’m playing catch up! It was such an amazing experience meeting inspirational photographers and wonderful women. Along with speaking about Business Plans, I demonstrated a family session and cakesmash similar to what we do right here at the HHP studio. I really wanted to show everyone there a real life situation that we often have to shoot in. My subjects were a local family with no modeling experience. We had just met online the week prior to the shoot! They turned out to be amazing! We photographed all of the family session in one spot against a white wall and window. The little birthday girl did an amazing job with 50 excited onlookers!
I think it is so important to see that you really don’t need anything special to make a beautiful portrait when you know your fundamentals. Often as new photographers we rely heavily on props and backgrounds to define our work and make it special. I think you start to feel really confident as a photographer when you know you can walk into any situation, in any light, with no props or special equipment, and pull of a beautiful session just through your knowledge of posing, camera settings, and connection with the subject. Here are a few favorites from the family shoot. Then, of course, we broke out the fabulous set and had some fun with a cakesmash in true Heidi Hope style! I’ll be previewing that fabulousness later this week, so keep an eye out!
