Motivation Monday. The story that keeps me focused in a world of distraction.

Hey friend!

It’s February.  It’s the slowest month of the year in our photography business.  It is a time of year that I reflect on how far we’ve come and plan ahead for the coming busy season.

Lately my area has been hit by one snow storm after another.  Being stuck indoors has me checking in online more then usual.  If I weren’t hopping on a plane to the Caribbean this weekend, I think I would be cracking up.

I generally pride myself on limiting my time online.  I plug my phone in when I get home from work and try not to check it until I hit the elliptical the next morning.  My creative brain works much better that way.  I need time to unplug.  But, this past month, there doesn’t seem to be much else to do besides checking in online.  I mean, I need SOME human interaction above the age of 6!

Being on social media so much, it’s become pretty obvious.

Everyone is selling something.

And that’s okay.  It’s awesome to watch people take charge of their lives and businesses and use the power of social media to pursue their dreams and reach millions of people.  Heck, I do it too!

But, it can feel overwhelming at times.

Time is our greatest asset and how we spend it makes a huge impact in the quality of our lives and work.

Here is a little peak inside my brain while making one scroll down my Facebook feed today.  (Beware… my brain is sometimes like a messy closet you don’t want to clean…)

“Wow, she looks amazing, I should totally sign up for those shakes!  I can have more energy to do my job AND maybe lose the last 10 baby pounds…”

“How to make a landing page to capture more leads?  I totally need this.  I still haven’t figured out how to make a good landing page.  My website is lame.  Maybe I should check out new WordPress templates while I’m at it…”

“Holy crap, more snow!  You have to be kidding me…”

“5 free ebook templates?  Yes please!  Sign me up.  Now I just have to write an ebook.  In all of my free time…”

“OMG she has that many Instagram followers?  What is she doing that I’m not?  I’m going to register for her webinar.”

“Hey there is that cute comforter from Potterybarn I almost bought yesterday… I should probably just buy it now since it is conveniently positioned in my newsfeed… ”

“An exclusive double dvd on how to get more customers?  For free?  Sign me up!  Wait… I don’t even need more customers…”

“A way to map, track, and share your social marketing plan company-wide…. definitely need that… click… download!”

“A free marketing planner…”

“Meals delivered to your door…”

You get the idea.

In a world full of experts it’s easy to feel like we don’t know anything anymore.  There is always someone smarter, thinner, more successful and doing it better.

I read this story a few years ago and I often think of it when I’m beginning to feel overwhelmed by all of the advice out there.

“Lying on his death bed, Reb Zusya was very upset and crying, tears streaming down his face.

His students asked with great concern, “Reb Zusya, why are you upset? Why are you crying? Are you afraid when you die you will be asked why you were not more like Moses?”

Reb Zusya replied, “I am not afraid that the Holy One will ask me ‘Zusya, why were you not more like Moses?’

Rather, I fear that the Holy One will say, ‘Zusya, why were you not more like Zusya?’”

So before you decide to sign up for the next best thing, remind yourself of this:

When all is said and done, you will never look back and regret that you didn’t have more Instagram followers, or convert more leads, or write that ebook.

You will only regret not doing the things that would have allowed you to live more fully in your true self.

So who is that true self?  What is the path you were meant to walk?  Not one person on the planet has that answer but you.  Which makes you the expert.

Every day, in each choice you make, you’re either moving closer to it or further away.

Think about it.

Your friend,

Heidi
